The inside visit
Before our tour begins, in the chateau's main courtyard, it is useful to place Chateau Figeac within the context of its appellation.
The Saint-Emilion appellation covers 5,400 hectares, and includes more than 1,200 estates.
Château-Figeac is one of two Premiers Grands Crus Classés located in a part of the appellation called "les Graves de Saint-Emilion". Figeac covers half of this outstanding terroir.
The gravelly soil was carried from the Massif Central region of France by glaciers and further transported by the rivers Isle and Dronne. The soil is composed of quartz pebbles rubbed smooth by their journey of over 300 kilometres.
Figeac has a higher proportion of Cabernet grapes than any other estate in Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Fronsac. The breakdown of grape varieties (35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc and only 30% Merlot) is ideally suited to the estate's gravelly soil. It also explains why Figeac is referred to as "the most Médoc of Saint-Emilion". Figeac's 40 hectares of vines make it the largest estate in the appelation.
