The outside visit
Le Nôtre, at the end of the 17th century, created the " parterre à la française " surrounded by the river Eure, which he canalised to create the perspective of a large alley of water, nowadays bridged by the romantic ruins of an aqueduct which remained uncompleted. This aqueduct was built in 1683 by Vauban and La Hire at the request of Louis XIV, to bring the water of the river Eure to Versailles.
The inside visit
FROM 1st APRIL TO 31st OCTOBER
During the week : from 2:00 to 6:00 pm, except on Tuesdays.
Sundays and public holidays : from 10:00 to 12:00 am and from 2:00 to 6:30 pm.
In JULY and AUGUST :
Everyday, public holidays included, from 10:00 to 12:00 am and from 2:00 to 6:30 pm.
Except on Tuesdays, from 2:00 to 6:30 pm only.
Last ticket sold at 11:15 am & 5:45 pm.
FROM 1st NOVEMBER TO 31st MARCH
During the week : groups upon reservation only, except on Tuesdays.
Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays : from 2:00 to 5:30 pm.
Last ticket sold at 4:45 pm.
During the visit, one can discover Madame de Maintenon's apartment, the ante-chamber, with golden leather covered walls and her bedroom, followed by the Maréchal de Noailles apartement showing a Louis XIV gilt and carved wood state bed, and decorating the alcove an 18th century set of hand painted percale drapes. The visit continues notably with two smaller drawing rooms covered with 18th century Chinese painted wall papers, leading to the main apartments : the king's drawing room (previously Louis XIV's bedroom),the drawing room , the billiard room, the library and the large gallery showing the portraits of the Noailles family. All these rooms present 17th, 18th, 19th century furniture, objects and paintings.
The Chinese painted wall papers, the library and the large gallery are listed as Historical Monuments.
